victoriousvocabulary:

SEPTICAEMIC PLAGUE [aka SEPTICEMIC]
[noun]
a deadly blood infection, one of the three main forms of plague. It is caused by Yersinia pestis, a gram-negative bacterium. Like some forms of gram-negative sepsis, septicaemic plague can cause disseminated intravascular coagulation, and is, without treatment, almost always fatal (the mortality rate during mediaeval times was 99-100 percent). It is the rarest of the three plagues that struck Europe in 1348, the other forms being bubonic and pneumonic plague. This disease is contracted primarily through the bite of an infected rodent or insect, but like the bubonic plague, it can very rarely be contracted through an opening in the skin or from being exposed to another human being coughing. The septicaemic plague occurs when the bacteria multiplies in the blood, causing bacteremia and severe sepsis.
